라스베이거스 7-Eleven에서 발생한 치명적인 총격 사건 관련, 전직 경비원에게 실형 선고
A former security guard arrested for fatally shooting someoneoutside a Las Vegas convenience store five years ago received her prison sentence Thursday.
A judge on Thursday ordered Kegia Mitchell to spend up to 14 years behind bars, per court records. She could be eligible for parole after serving over five years.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said Mitchell, now 41, was involved in a shooting outside a 7-Eleven at Las Vegas Boulevard and Craig Road in August 2020.
Investigators learned she was working as armed security and checking customers into the store because of COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time.
Thomas Martin, 56, tried to enter as another customer exited, and he and Mitchell started pushing each other.
Martin "backed away and Mitchell proceeded to shoot him one time," LVMPD said in a statement at the time.
Martin reached an Alford plea agreement with prosecutors earlier this year for charges of voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon and assault.
An Alford plea means Martin does not admit to any guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence to lead to a conviction at trial.
